We all feel anxious and stressed out at some point, especially when we’re dealing with pressure or about to try something new, or when things go beyond our control. And you know, what? That’s perfectly normal.

Anxiety, however, is an entirely different story.

For people with anxiety, stress can become so consuming that it begins to interfere with their daily lives. Anxiety encompasses the body’s internal reaction to stress and stressful situations, which often includes difficulty sleeping tension headaches, and an increase in heart rate. Suffice it to say, frequent and full-on pangs of anxiety can be debilitating.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably already heard of CBD – the newest “it” thing in the health and wellness world. If you do a quick search online, you’ll find dozens upon dozens of products flooding the market, from CBD oils and salves to CBD-infused chocolates and even gummy bears!

The growing popularity of CBD is primarily attributed to its many valuable health benefits, including its role in potentially alleviating anxiety disorders.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants like marijuana and hemp. Due to their association to weed, many people think that CBD products can get them “high” the same way marijuana does, but that’s entirely not the case.

Hemp-derived CBD contains no-to-very-little amounts of THC – the psychoactive compound in weed, which means experiencing a “high” from consuming CBD products is highly unlikely.

How does it help treat anxiety?

Long before the CBD market became the multi-million-dollar industry that it is today, studies on cannabidiol as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders were already underway.

One study from 2011 reported that most patients showed significant signs of improvement and a decrease in anxiety levels after receiving CBD or adding CBD to their treatment. Another study by the New York University School of Medicine revealed the possible short-term benefits of CBD for people with social and generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

Experts are still in the process of figuring out the exact science of how CBD works as a treatment for anxiety. The general assumption, however, is that CBD’s calming and relaxing properties stem from its ability to interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system plays a role in regulating bodily functions such as sleep, mood, and behavior. It is said that when you consume CBD products, cannabidiol enters the bloodstream and then interacts with the brain’s endocannabinoid receptors, where it helps modulate emotional learning and stress response.

CBD can quiet stress signals, ease neural activity in the brain, and regulate cortisol secretion – all of which are associated with the body’s response to stress, fear, and anxiety.

CBD Oils as a treatment for anxiety

Those who want to try using CDB to help manage stress and anxiety will find different forms of CBD products to choose from. CBD oils and tinctures are by far the most popular options, while gummies, lollipops, and chocolates are perhaps the easiest and yummiest way to get your daily dose of cannabidiol.

Still, CBD advocates believe that CBD oil is the best for treating anxiety because of its quick onset of effects. For beginners, a 15mg-20mg dose of CBD should be enough to achieve desired results.

While many people swear by the efficacy of using CBD products in reducing anxiety levels, you should not rely on CBD alone for managing chronic stress and anxiety. Practice a healthier lifestyle and look after your physical, mental, and emotional well-being through proper rest and exercise.

Most importantly, speak with your doctor first before trying any CBD product for anxiety to avoid any risk of harmful interactions and side effects.
