How Is CBD Oil Extracted? 1

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many components in the cannabis plant and has shown promise in a variety of medical applications, such as anxiety and pain relief.

Because CBD contains trace amounts of THC, it opens up the possibility for just about anyone to take it without having to endure the psychoactive effects. With that being said, there are numerous ways to extract CBD oil from cannabis, some more desirable than others.

C02 Extraction

There are several categories of C02 extraction, subcritical, supercritical, and mid-critical, but supercritical is the most common method used by the most trusted CBD manufacturers like CBDistillery. Amongst all of the extraction methods, this is the safest and provides the purest product by far.

This process uses pressurized carbon dioxide (C02) to draw CBD from the cannabis plant. C02 extraction begins with a solid piece of C02 that is pumped into a chamber with cannabis. The chamber is pressurized, such that the C02 remains in a liquid state and absorbs the oils and flavors of the plant.

Finally, the C02-CBD mixed content is pumped into another chamber where the C02 returns to a gas, leaving behind the cannabis plant’s oil and flavors.

Winterization is a process that involves removing elements from the cannabis plant that are undesirable, such as waxes and fats. This process is required for supercritical extraction methods, which include high pressure and temperature processes that pull everything from the plant.

After the initial extraction, the mixture is combined with 200 proof alcohol and stirred until it is thoroughly mixed. The “winterization” comes in here, where the mixture is put in a freezer overnight. The next morning, it will be cloudy and ready for filtration.

Filtering out of the fats and other unwanted elements is done by running it through a filter paper into an extraction jar. Once filtered to a satisfactory level, and the undesirable elements have been removed, the alcohol can be removed using heat to evaporate it.

Short Path Distillation

To take the process one step further to refine your oil, you can run it through a process called short path distillation. The critical advantage of this process is that different compounds in CBD oil have a unique boiling point.

To acquire the purest CBD oil, you boil off the desired compounds that have a lower boiling point than the oil itself. The process begins by slowly heating the CDB mixture until the undesired substance boils off.

The resulting vapors travel through a tube until they reach cooling coils, where they eventually condense and drip down into a collection container. At the end of this process, only pure CBD oil remains.

CBD oil has exploded in popularity worldwide, both conversationally and as a remedy for all sorts of medical applications. Some consumers are concerned by the lack of standards for producing CBD oil, and this is not unwarranted.

Before purchasing, ask about the methods your CBD dispensary use to remove the impurities, so you know that you are getting the best quality product.
